District Personnel Changes

Mr. Devincenzi, our HS and MS Assistant Principal and our Athletic Director has concluded his employment with Millbrook. For his years of service and legacy here I join in the collective appreciation of his students, friends, colleagues and community associates for the contributions he has made to the lives and programs our students have enjoyed each day. We wish him the very best in his new Assistant Principal opportunity in the Wallkill Central School District. Additionally last night, Monday, October 17th, the Board of Education appointed individuals to assume Mr. Devincenzi’s duties through the balance of this school year; that is, through June 30, 2012. First, two of our staff, Bill Blayney and Dawn Harkenrider will become Co-Athletic Directors. They can be contacted through the Athletics Hot Line (677-2019) or the Athletic Director phone extension at 677-4200, extension 2329. Secondly, as Interim Assistant Principal for our High School and Middle School, the Board has appointed Marisa Merlino, an experienced building and program administrator whose work over the last decade was in the Wappingers and Hyde Park School Districts. All three of our appointees began their new assignments Tuesday, October 18th. We welcome Mrs. Merlino and thank Mr. Blayney and Ms. Harkenrider for undertaking the leadership of our athletic program.

Elementary Administration Announcement 2011-2012

A MESSAGE FROM DR. JAEGER

This message was distributed to staff and parents of both the Elm Drive and Alden Place Elementary Schools on Thursday evening, April 28, 2011 using the Alert Now Notification System.

I am pleased to share important information regarding our elementary administration and program for next year, 2011-2012.  Mrs. Fitzgerald will continue as Elm Drive Principal and Mr. Libka will continue as Alden Place principal. However, we will be extending their joint work with the K-5 faculty and K-5 program in 2011-12. Both Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mr. Libka will be working with our Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Ackerman, in both buildings next year to develop greater K-5 consistency and more definitive measures for measuring student progress and achievement at each grade level. These are important elementary program improvement goals for our district and will assist us in monitoring student progress more effectively as our students move from grade to grade. So while Mrs. Fitzgerald will continue as Principal at Elm Drive, she will also serve as the K-5 program liaison administrator for English Language Arts and Social Studies, and be meeting with Elm and Alden staff to develop these program areas further with Dr. Ackerman. In Mr. Libka’s case, he will continue as Principal of Alden Place, and he will serve as the K-5 program liaison administrator for Math and Science, meeting with Elm and Alden staff to develop those program areas further with Dr. Ackerman. Our district is preparing your children at a time when NYS is changing curriculum standards, assessments, and evaluation systems. Our overall goal is to insure that our K-5 program is intentionally designed and administered not as two separate buildings, but with consistent expectations and support systems for student development. By continuing in their current principal roles and by sharing coordination efforts within the district’s K-5 program, Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mr. Libka look forward to working with Dr. Ackerman and me to serve our children with greater consistency and continuous improvements.

SCHOOL FACILITIES PROPOSAL APPROVED

The Board of Education thanks our school district community for its continuing support. By a vote of 294 to 244, the school facilities proposal was approved with 54.6% voting positively. This approved proposal will enable our District to make much needed essential repairs to our three oldest buildings - Elm Drive, Alden Place and Millbrook Middle School. The Board also acknowledges with deep appreciation the fiscal support of the generous benefactors in our community, whose significant donations will be applied to offset the approved expenditures for a new track and baseball field, thereby keeping the tax impact of these much needed improvements to a minimum. Additionally, the site work improvements to our athletic fields will now be eligible for state aid reimbursements of up to 23% because voters approved expenditures in combination with the building construction at our schools. We look forward in the coming months to submitting our construction plans to the State Education Department for its final approval and then commencing construction as soon as construction bids can be advertised and accepted. In the best case scenario, we hope to begin some construction as early as the summer of 2012. We will keep you posted on our planning and progress.

Once again thank you for your continuing support.

Thomas M. Hurley

President, Board of Education
