Mallory Peterson netted a hat trick for the Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion Blazers (14-1-1). Amanda Stewart chipped in with two goals for top-seeded Millbrook, which will
face the winner of today's 2 p.m. semifinal between second-seeded S.S.
Seward and sixth-seeded Chester. The title game will be held on Saturday
at 4:30 p.m. at Newburgh Free Academy.
"It feels good to be there again," Millbrook's first-year coach, Sean
McGuigan, said of the Blazers, who tied S.S. Seward 1-1 in last year's
final before the Spartans advanced to the state tournament on penalty
kicks. "We're ready for the sectional finals and we hope this is the
year we break through."
McGuigan said he is encouraged by the offensive play of Peterson and Stewart at this time of the season.
"They're great," McGuigan said. "This is when we need them — to get to the (state) tournament."
While Millbrook was advancing to the final, one first-round match was still
being played thanks to local cancellations because of inclement weather.
Chester tied Webutuck 0-0 in that first-round match, but advanced to
the semifinals against Seward by defeating the Warriors on penalty
kicks, 4-2.
MARLBORO — Amanda Stewart, a senior on the Millbrook High School
girls soccer team, had never played for a Blazers team that had beaten
Red Hook nor won a Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament title.
That was before Wednesday.
Stewart
scored the lone goal in the championship game at Dennis Burkett Field,
and the the Blazers captured their first-ever MHAL crown with a 1-0
victory against the Raiders.
"I've
been wanting this my whole life," said Stewart, whose team improved to
13-1-1. "It's my senior year, and we've been really looking forward to
this and we finally beat Red Hook."
Less than 10 minutes before halftime, Stewart gave the Blazers the only lead they needed.
Using
her eyes to follow a corner kick from the right side, Stewart met the
sailing sphere with her head in front of the net, just left of center.
Stewart headed the ball into the upper, left-hand corner of the goal and
gave Millbrook a 1-0 lead with 9:09 remaining until the break.
"Headers
are really something we've been really working on," she said. "For me
to get that header, I'm so happy. I've always dreamed about that amazing
goal, and it happened."
Calling
Stewart's goal "by far, the best header I've ever seen," Millbrook
coach Sean McGuigan said words couldn't describe the emotions he felt
after the final whistle.
"I don't even know how to react," McGuigan said. "I'm loving it, and I just want to get these girls ready for sectionals."
Red
Hook coach Jason Pavlich said he'd have liked to see his team finish
its chances better on Wednesday — "We had our opportunities," he said —
but he said his Raiders will focus on the upcoming Section 9 tournament.
"Thankfully, the season goes on," Pavlich said. "We have sectionals next week, so we can try to get it back there."
MARLBORO — Millbrook High won its first-ever Mid-Hudson Athletic League
girls soccer championship as the Blazers shut out Red Hook 1-0 in
Wednesday’s final.
Amanda Stewart scored the winning goal in the 32nd minute off of a corner kick by Mallory Peterson.
Keeper Alexis Loussedes preserved the win with four saves in goal for 13-1 Millbrook.
Goalie Becky Fildes had one save in the loss for the Raiders (12-4).

A year ago, the Millbrook High School girls soccer lost by a goal to S.S. Seward in the Section 9 Class C final.
On Monday, 363 days later, the Blazers will have another chance.
Millbrook, seeded No. 2 in this year's tournament, earned that right by marching by No. 3 Tri-Valley on Friday, 8-0, behind five goals by Mallory Peterson.
No. 1 Seward dropped No. 4 Webutuck, 3-0, in the other semifinal.
Peterson scored her first goal in the fifth minute on an assist from Amanda Stewart, who also assisted on Peterson's second goal 23 minutes later. She scored again in the 35th, 52nd and 71st minutes.
Stewart scored a pair of goals of her own, in the eighth and 33rd minutes. Monica Koralus scored in the 37th minute, with a Peterson assist.
Millbrook (11-4-1) took 35 shots in the game — putting 24 on goal — and held Tri-Valley to five shots total. Alexis Loussedes and Megan Revay split time in goal for the Blazers, making three stops combined.

Millbrook girls advance to Class C soccer final
Sean T. McMann
Poughkeepsie Journal
The top-seeded
girls soccer team from Millbrook High School overcame a halftime deficit to defeat visiting Tri-Valley 2-1 on Thursday to advance to the
Section 9 Class C title game.
After
the fourth-seeded Bears took a 1-0 lead at the break on the strength of
Jakki Pugh's goal midway through the first half, Millbrook used
second-half goals by Amanda Stewart and Rachel Pierantozzi to come away
with the victory.
"After
scoring her goal in the first half Tri-Valley moved Jakki Pugh to
defense. That permitted Millbrook to maintain the constant pressure
that came from the midfield as Tri-Valley tried to ward off a constant
Millbrook drive," Blazers coach Michael Williams said. "Mallory
Peterson and Regina Stewart controlled the pace of the game at midfield
for Millbrook, which dominated the play in the second half."
The Blazers allowed just a few shots on goal but couldn't capitalize on their own offensives chances, Williams said.
"Tri-Valley
ran a counter offense that came close to paying off a number of times
in the second half," the Blazers' coach said. "The Millbrook defense
bent but did not break. Anna Gagnon anchored a stingy Millbrook defense
that allowed only four shots overall.
"We
played well all game but simply did not take the opportunities
presented to us. Too many close-in shots went over the crossbar that
should have given us a greater cushion late in the game."
The
Blazers will play for a sectional title against second-seeded S.S.
Seward, which beat third-seeded Tuxedo 3-1 in Thursday's other Section
9 Class C semifinal.
Gladys Loyas scored a pair of goals for Seward, which improved to 13-3-1.
Millbrook and Seward will play for the championship on Monday at 4 p.m. at Middletown's Faller Field.

Millbrook girls' soccer completes unbeaten league, division season
MILLBROOK – It was a perfect night for the Millbrook High School girls’ soccer team.
Not only did the Blazers celebrate Senior Night, but they completed an
undefeated league and division season with a 4-0 Mid-Hudson Athletic
League win over Webutuck on Thursday.
Millbrook, now 10-1-1 overall, 7-0-1 in the MHAL and 4-0 in Division 4, had
already clinched a postseason berth and will compete in the league
semifinals on October 19 at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton,
joining Wallkill, Red Hook and Spackenkill. Mallory Peterson and Amanda Stewart each had two goals and an assist to lead Millbrook. The first two came just two minutes apart midway through the first half; the next two, “they both caught the Webutuck keeper off her line to
secure their second goals of the night,” Blazers coach Michael Williams
said, adding that Regina Stewart controlled the pace of play throughout
the game. Alexis Loussedes recorded her eighth shutout of the season. (Hudson Valley Sports Report)
