SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES

Our goal is to create a learning environment unique to each student where they have the opportunity to maximize their potential. Students with special needs are given accomodations and/or program modifications to insure success and build confidence. Millbrook High School has an integrated approach to placing special education students. In accordance with New York State Special Education Law, we are required to offer students an educational environment in the least restrictive setting. With this in mind, students are placed in classes with their peers with appropriate teacher support. In addition, they are given resource room or study skills as outlined in their Individual Education Plan. In some cases, a student may be served outside the building in an alternate setting which supports more intensive interventions.

The Committee on Special Education consists of the CSE chairperson, school psychologist, guidance counselors and teachers. Parent/guardians and students are offered a parent advocate who has a child with special needs in the district. All participate at an annual review of the students needs. This enables us to prepare a program for the following year based on past success or struggles.

In order to refer a child to the Committee on Special Education, a parent/guardian must send a letter in writing to:

Millbrook Central School District

Committe for Special Education

70 Church Street

PO Box AA

Millbrook NY 12545

Phone: 845-677-4200

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call your child's counselor.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND EXAMS

Students with disabilities have an Individual Education Plan that is unique to their needs. They participate in the same academic and elective courses that their peers undertake. Students are given support in the form of accomodations for testing and modifications for classwork, homework and projects. These may be, but are not limited to; extended time, special location, copy of notes etc. Most of our students go on to earn a Regents Level Diploma and pass all required state exams with a 65 or better. Some students earn a Local Level Diploma by passing Regents with a 55 or by passing Regent Competency Exams in academic subjects. An IEP diploma is an option for students unable to meet the above criteria.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND SAT/AP AND ACT TEST ACCOMODATIONS

Students who plan on applying to a Four-Year College are encouraged to take the SAT and/or ACT exams. Collegeboard administers the SAT/AP Examinations.  American College Testing administers the ACT Examination. Students who are enrolled at the High School who take Advanced Placement courses can also apply for test accomodations. A consent form is available at your child's Annual Review and in the main office.  Please complete this form and return it to Lisa Petta in Guidance.  At that time, we will send all needed documents for accomodations to the centers.  Please keep in mind:

1.  There is no guarantee these test centers will grant test accomodations

2. Test accomodations may not be the same as those your child receives in High School

3. It takes about 8 weeks from submission to receive a decision

4. It is the parent's responsibility to submit the consent and to register online or through mail for the exam
