MHS Girls Lacrosse Players Receive 2017 Lacrosse Honors

Members of the girls lacrosse team were awarded honors for the Section 9 Chapter of US Lacrosse. The Jackie Pitts Award recipient is given to only one senior from Section 9 who "exemplifies the spirit of the game, on and off the field." This award was given to Senior Captain Kelly Waters. In the two years this award has been given out, a player from Millbrook has been the recipient both times. Out of the 19 teams in Section 9, only three players were named an All-American, and Junior Captain Kaitlyn Daly received this honor. Congratulations to the girls and to the entire team on a fantastic season!

Middle School Student Is A National Medalist!

Congratulations to 8th grader Lauren Jones who had a piece of artwork selected for a National Medal in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Back in February Scholastic announced the Regional award winners for Art and Lauren received 1 Gold Key and 3 Silver Keys. The Regional Gold Key winners were sent to the National contest for judging, and in March, Lauren's “Splash Mandala Bowl” was selected as a Gold medal winner. Of the 330,000 items submitted to regional contests, 2,700 were national winners.

Lauren was invited to the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony held over 3 days in New York City this June. There she attended a Maker Prom at The Roosevelt Hotel and the National Ceremony held at Carnegie Hall, where Amy Schumer was the guest speaker. Lauren's work was on display at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery and will now go on a Scholastic National Tour.

This is the first year Millbrook participated in the Scholastic Art Awards, we had 35 Gold and Silver Keys awarded overall. Lauren is now the first National Medalist from Millbrook.

MHS Earth Science Students Travel to the American Museum of Natural History

On April 18, Mr. Keller's Earth Science Classes traveled by coach bus to the American Museum of Natural History in N.Y.C.

Once there, they saw a hologram show on dark matter and our expanding universe in the Space Theater. They then went on a scavenger hunt through the Hall of Planet Earth and the gem room to find clues to the origin of life, the origin of Earth itself and the cycles of the earth.

They then viewed efforts to repopulate humpback whales in the Imax theater in 3-D, and finished with a tour of the dinosaur exhibits.

The trip was designed to reinforce many of the topics already studied in Earth Science as well as serve to introduce several new topics which will be studied in ;the last quarter of the school year.

In all, the trip was enjoyed and appreciated by all as an educational and instructional experience, while still having a tremendous `Wow !' factor from the shows and the dinosaurs. `I didn't realize the dinosaurs were THAT big' `Birds really are direct descendants of dinosaurs ?' are direct quotes from students in attendance.
